Newcomers Find Their Way to the RTW 5K
Two newcomers to the RTW 5K Series, Cornelio Garibay and Steven King, both of Houston, waged a back-and-forth battle for the lead from start to finish. The final difference was two seconds, with Garibay taking the win.
Multi-time RTW winner Craig Calmes finished third overall and clipped two seconds off his existing masters' course record. Calmes arrived at the race indicating that he plan to run easy saving himself for a race next weekend. However, when Garibay and King bolted into the lead, he couldn't resist the temptation to try to stay with them.
Another RTW first-timer, Kathryn Scarborough of Pearland, missed the women's course record of 19:16 by ten seconds.
Although the total of 45 finishers was well off the all-time RTW high of 90 set last August, it was the highest of 2002. Included were at least a dozen runners who were running their first RTW.
Conditions: foggy; low's 70's on the way to the mid-70's; humid; calm.
The next race in the series is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th. The entry fee remains $1.00 (yes, one dollar).
